Connected Glass Roof:

Ubiquitous Connectivity and Secure Car Access

Our Connected Glass Roof brings a new standard in Secure Car Access through the integration of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. This next-generation solution enables precise, keyless entry, allowing only authorized users to access the vehicle while offering enhanced protection against modern security threats like relay attacks. Unlike traditional key fobs or Bluetooth systems, UWB operates with centimeter-level precision and time-of-flight tracking, ensuring only the rightful user can access the vehicle. While Bluetooth and key fobs are vulnerable to signal interception and relay attacks, UWB’s ultra-precise range detection makes these exploits nearly impossible. With our innovation, drivers benefit from a smarter, safer, and more seamless entry experience.

Connectivity should not end where terrestrial networks do. By integrating satellite communication (SatCom) antennas directly into the glass roof, the Connected Glass Roof extends reliable coverage to remote areas such as fields, mountains, and off-grid regions. This ensures continuous access to emergency calls and over-the-air updates, while also supporting passenger services including infotainment and video calls. With SatCom and 5G working together, vehicles remain connected everywhere, giving drivers and passengers confidence on every journey.

Wideband Makes the Difference

The Connected Glass Roof is built on our Wideband array technology, designed specifically for the automotive environment. Narrowband antennas cover only basic functions like eCall or IoT messaging, while Broadband systems remain difficult to integrate to automotive-grade standards, making them unsuitable for mass deployment. Wideband offers the optimal balance of high throughput, strong link stability, and efficient spectrum use while keeping integration and cost under control. It supports advanced applications such as video communication and over-the-air updates with a performance level that is far beyond Narrowband, while remaining cost-efficient compared to Broadband. With Wideband arrays, OEMs gain a solution that is scalable, reliable, and ready for global mobility, ensuring drivers and passengers stay connected in every environment.

All Modern Antennas Integrated Directly in the Glass Roof

Integrating antennas into the glass means fewer separate components, lower system cost, and simplified assembly. By replacing shark fins and telematics boxes, OEMs benefit from reduced complexity, improved reliability, and better lifecycle economics, without sacrificing performance.

Best Performance to Cost Ratio

Hidden behind Black Band

Every antenna is fully hidden within the black ceramic band. From the outside, nothing interrupts the vehicle design. From the inside, passengers enjoy an open view of the sky. Connectivity is there, but invisible.

Sleek Design, Efficient Performance

Connected Glass Roof brings all connectivity elements required by modern vehicles, and exhibits several advantages:

  • Best Aesthetics: Flat exterior design, wide panoramic view

  • High Performance: Large enough to distribute antennas, high above ground without car body obstruction

  • Easy Integration: Plug & Play assembly with all antennas on a single vehicle part

  • Energy Efficiency: Keeps needed warmth inside during winter and excessive heat outside in summer

Being high above ground, with unobstructed view all around the car, the roof is the ideal location for many antenna systems, providing optimal 360° outdoor coverage.

Thanks to its large surface, antennas can be distributed, therefore reducing undesirable coupling and increasing antenna system diversity.

By resorting to double coatings, the glass roof keeps thermal comfort inside the vehicle. A Low-E coating on the inner face keeps warmth inside during winter, while an IR-reflective coating keeps heat outside in summer.

Compatibility between conductive coatings and antennas is ensured locally by our WAVETHRU™ technology as well as other similar smart decoating techniques.

Being locally transparent to both light and electromagnetic waves, the connected roof antennas can support both outdoor and indoor use cases.

With an unobstructed view towards the sky, the Connected Glass Roof is also ideal to bear antennas dedicated to Satellite Connectivity.

Testing and Validation

The Connected Glass Roof's performance has been validated through a combination of controlled laboratory testing and real-world evaluations. In our ISO-accredited anechoic chambers in Belgium, antenna gain, bandwidth, and radiation patterns are precisely characterized. These results have been complemented by live satellite trials with L/S-band arrays, confirming broadband connectivity under real operating conditions.

Safety and Durability

As an integral part of the vehicle roof, the Connected Glass Roof is designed to meet all automotive glazing safety standards. Backed by AGC’s decades of expertise in automotive glass manufacturing, the solution combines proven glazing processes with advanced antenna integration. UV-resistant coatings, precision lamination, and strict quality control ensure that the glass retains both its transparency and antenna efficiency over the full service life of the vehicle.
